A Bit on Japan's Quality

U.S. auto makers got a small lift from a new Consumer Reports survey that found some models closing the reliability gap with their foreign competitors.

But Detroit's auto makers, which are trying to stem red ink in their North American operations, still lagged well behind Asian auto makers in vehicles that got top marks from the magazine.

Three of Ford Motor Co.'s newest models scored among Consumer Reports' top reliable vehicles, with the Ford Fusion and the Mercury Milan sedans scoring slightly better than the V-6 versions of Honda Motor Co.'s Accord and Toyota Motor Corp.'s Camry. Ford's Lincoln Zephyr, introduced in 2006, was the second most reliable upscale sedan after the 2007 Lexus ES350, which scored highest overall. The Fusion made Consumer Reports' list of most impressive new cars.

Other domestic vehicles the magazine found reliable in its annual survey were General Motors Corp.'s Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS, with above average ratings in their first year. GM got a nod for two sports-utility vehicles: the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

Still, 39 of the 47 vehicles with the highest predicted reliability scores were from auto makers based in Japan. Of those, Toyota dominated, with 21 vehicles. Honda and its Acura division had 11. Only six domestic models made the list.

"It's mainly a perception gap," said Debbe Yeager, Ford's director of global quality, referring to her company's struggle to overcome the strong quality reputations of foreign rivals like Toyota.

But it will be some time before parity exists among the domestic and foreign brands, said David Champion, Consumer Reports' director of automobile testing. "They are catching up," Mr. Champion said. He added, "you've got to produce a car that's very reliable over time. I would like to see how reliable the Ford Fusion is in the fifth year."

Indeed, the Big Three still have work to do. Of the magazine's 45 least-reliable cars, nearly half were domestic -- 12 from GM, five from Ford and three from DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group. Five of Nissan Motor Co.'s vehicles made the least-reliable list, and nearly all were built at its Canton, Miss., plant, which has been plagued by quality problems. But Consumer Reports said that the Nissan's reliability has improved somewhat. A Nissan spokeswoman said the results don't take into account recent improvements in vehicle quality.

European models -- including DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz; Ford's Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover; GM's Saab; and those of Porsche AG and BMW AG -- filled 19 spots on the least-reliable list. None of Honda's or Toyota's vehicles appeared on the list.

Consumer Reports said family and small cars proved most reliable, with Honda and Toyota making the most appearances in the group.

The magazine surveyed 1.3 million vehicles from its subscribers, ranging in model year from 1997 to 2006. The magazine used the survey data to predict reliability of new 2007 models. To predict reliability of currently available models, Consumer Reports averaged reliability scores for the most recent three years.
