To the best of my knowledge, google did take minority stake in baidu along with other VC. It is said the funding is about 10 million as reported. Seriously, I am not sure why google did that, since they are going to compete with baidu head to head in china. It is probably strategic. Three years ago, people from baidu stabbed google in china. Basically they reported to Chinese authority about getting out a lot of uncensored information from google search, they suggested that it was necessary to have Chinese own search engine with central censorship in place. Google was blocked for a while in china back then. It definitely helped baidu to get off the groud. Also I heard a rumor, founder of baidu, Robin spoke in private that two founders from google copied his link algorithm, which really pissed google guys. Actually IBM lab came out link analysis algorithm at first, it wasn’t Robin nor Sergey Brin and Larry Page per se. three years ago, when I talked to Robin about their technical infrastructure, it seemed baidu did have some meat in its plate comparing to other “claimed search engines” in china. personally, I believe we are still in stone age of search engine technology, searching is still very primitive, it will be long way to go for sure.
