World's Poor Children Increasingly Vulnerable
Hundreds of millions of children －－ orphans, the homeless, child brides, soldiers and refugees among them －－ suffer from extreme forms of discrimination and exploitation that often are not addressed by mainstream development programs, according to a report released by the United Nations Children's Fund. Right from birth, more than 50 million children a year －－ over half the children born in all developing countries, except China －－ are not registered or provided with a legal identity, a missing link that can make it difficult later in life for them to get a job, a passport, a bank account or the opportunity to exercise the right to vote, the New York Times says, citing the report. The report, "Excluded and Invisible," catalogs the conditions that increase the vulnerability of children.
They are children with no parents to look after them, children forced prematurely into the adult roles of wife, soldier or worker, children trafficked across national lines, forced into bondage or hired out as domestic servants. Children being trafficked for sex and other forms of exploitation, who number an estimated 1.2 million a year, are traded as commodities and subjected to "unspeakable abuses," even in developed countries, Unicef Executive Director Ann M. Veneman, a former U.S. agriculture secretary, tells the Los Angeles Times. And 143 million children in the developing world, or one in 13, have lost at least one parent, which often takes a toll on their health and education. Among them are 15 million children orphaned by AIDS world-wide.
