CHINA TO BUILD HUGE CAR-SHIPPING PORT. China
plans to open a $62 million port facility next summer in
Guangzhou that can handle up to 600,000 vehicles a
year, reports Japan’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
The facility will begin by shipping locally produced
Toyota vehicles, and the port’s backers hope that nearby
ventures that produce Honda and Nissan vehicles also
will use the terminal.
Toyota’s Guangzhou venture will begin producing
Camry sedans next year and expects to reach annual
output of 200,000 units in a few years.
Guangzhou Honda makes 240,000 vehicles annually,
including Accord midsize sedans, Odyssey minivans and
Fit subcompact cars. It plans to add a second plant in
Guangzhou by the second half of 2006 with capacity to
make another 120,000 vehicles annually.
Nissan’s Guangzhou joint venture builds about
150,000 vehicles annually, including the Nissan Sunny
compact and Bluebird large sedan.
