Andrew Lloyd Webber is Jewish. Jews don't believe in Christ. The story in the show depicts how an ordinary man is made into the saintly man as known by Christians by circumstances not in his control.
The song can be taken at many levels. To me it's a wonderful love song that goes well below skin level and deep into the soul.
And it is the height of spirituality - regardless of a particular religion or belief - that a person at the bottom of respect in humanity - a prostitute - is so overwhelmed can because a man at the top has shown her respect and tries to sing of her deep love for that man that she can't even know how. That's true love: to know that you love someone without knowing how to love! Of course, true love is inexplicable because if it is true love it comes inexplicably from the soul and can't be explained in the operations of doing it.

I fell in love with it the first time I heard it! And learned and recorded it wihtin 3 days - the shortest time so far.
There are so many great versions on Youtube, the one touches me the most is Yvonne Elliman's, even though I had no clue who she is before. Later I found out she was the one who performed for four years in the first cast of Jesus Christ Superstar.
