You lived in the States and should know the reality better.
Public transit is good in general sense and it is pushed wherever it is feasible. Check out new light rail projects in cities like LA, Phoenix, Oklahoma City, Reno, San Antonio, and the list goes on and on.
However, there are two things that make public transit less effective in US:
1. population density that is much lower than that in China, Japan, Europe;
2. city layouts that have been developed over 100 years, based upon the wide avaibility of private cars.
To connect people via public transit with schools, hospitals, libraries, shops, parks and so on, it takes a great deal of time and effort to practically rebuild the country. Another 100 years and zillions of dollars later, we might see such a pub transit system. The question is whether it is the best way to deal with the issue in US?
On the other hand, we don't come with such a package in China. We are able to avoid such mistakes now. But will we? Look at the car mess we start experiencing in many cities in mainland. It is a typical example of ignoring the obvious because "why we cannot live like you" mentality. Simply stupid!
