The Descendants of the Dragon
Hau Tak-kin

There is a great river in the Far East,
The river’s name is the Changjiang;
There is another great river in the Far East,
The river’s name is the Huanghe;
Although I have never seen the beautiful Changjiang,
In my dreams I have swum in it;
Although I’ve never heard the roar of the Huanghe,
In my dream I’ve stood by its turbulent waves.
There is a dragon in the ancient east,
The dragon’s name is China;
There are people in the ancient east,
They are all the descendants of the dragon,;
I grew up at the feet of this mighty dragon,
I am a descendant of the dragon,
With black eyes, black hair and a yellow skin,
For ever and ever a descendant of the dragon.
One quiet night a hundred years ago,
Deep in the night, before the great upheaval,
The sound of guns broke the silence;
The enemies’ swords closed in on our cowardice.
The roaring of the guns echoes after so many years,
After so many years, so many years.
Mighty dragon, now keep your eyes open,
Keep your eyes open for ever and ever!
Why Bother?
Well, today’s tree cannot be blown by yesterday’s wind,
Tomorrow’s sun cannot shine on today’s tree.
Time is always surging forward,
And no one can turn back youth,
Neither you nor I,
What does it matter if one weeps or laughs?
The sweetness of success cannot stop the pain of failure,
Nor the pain of failure the advance of success.
Though spring will not last for ever,
Winter is certainly not the conclusion.
It matters not whether it’s light or dark.
So why bother worrying so about success or failure?
