let's look at pros and cons and you should do a similar analysis based on your own life priorities.
pros:
1. close to old friends and extended family, familiar culture/language
2. service is cheap (nanny, 小姐，etc)
3. dollar's purchasing power is very strong (only if you are paid in dollar standard)
cons:
1. not good for family, period. the (materialistic/money cultural) env is bad for kids,
and there are too mmany temptations for men/husbands.
2. morally bankrupt society. hard to make real friends and find ppl to trust. everyone
wants to use you.
3. lack of healthy entertainment. golf/tennis/ski etc are all very expensive. there's no
central park in shanghai. good concerts/opera/ballet/shows/movies are very limited, many
are cheap stuff. the real ones are very very expensive. karaok, sauna, brothel are not
entertainment. even if u are into it, how long can you be excited about it??
4. environmental hazards. air is polluted, water is not clean, food are contaminated. the
long term effect on health can mean high probability of cancer. it's improving though.
5. heathcare system can be disastrous. stay healthy even though it's very hard to do in china.
neutral:
1. food are good and abundant in variety. but u will get sick and tired after dining out
for a week and plus, with all the fake/poisonous stuff they put into food? so it's a neutral.
2. infrastructure. shanghai has first world infrastructure. the architecture is dull and the
overall infrastructure of the country has a lot to catch up with the west.
3. career potential. you probably can find a higher position in china. but the risk is the
locals will try everything to see you fall if u r overpaid by local standards. start up a
company is very difficult in china unless ur father is jiang zemin or u know prime minister's
son. US is still by far the most friendly to start-ups. and the truth is that if you can't do
well in the US corporate world, what makes u think u can do better in china?
all in all, if someone gets rich in china, mostly likely he/she would like to move out of
china to the US or Canada. that says a lot about how you should make your decisions.
