Ever-changing Shanghai, epicenter of China's booming economy, is a bustling, blustering city that epitomizes modern China. Its most remarkable hotel, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, also captures the spirit of today's China: It is housed in the Jin Mao Tower, which is what a pagoda might look like if it had been turned into an 88-story skyscraper.
For Chinese, 88 is a very auspicious number, and this hotel has its charms. Instead of checking in on the ground floor, guests take an elevator up to the 54th-floor lobby, where huge windows showcase Shanghai spread out below. Every room has a view of the city, since rooms are arranged around a 33-story-tall center courtyard atrium.
The hotel's interior decoration is clean and modern--more warmly art-deco than coldly minimalist. And rooms have Chinese touches: Headboards have Tang Dynasty poems in gold calligraphy, and Ming-style cabinets hide televisions. Bathrooms are white marble and glass, and some bathtubs are next to windows for views of Shanghai. Doubles range from $425 to $515, suites from $655 to $5,120 for the Chairman's Suite, which has a living and dining room large enough for 12 guests.
While the rooms are pleasant, guests may be too busy exploring the rest of the hotel to spend much time in them. Cloud 9, on the 87th floor, is a bar overlooking Shanghai's riverfront. Lights are kept dim to show off the sparkling city below. A fortune-teller, a magician and other entertainers wander through the bar each evening.
There are eight restaurants and bars in the hotel, plus a full-fledged nightclub with disco and karaoke areas and an underground food court for quick meals. There's a piano bar, where a Chinese singer croons Shanghainese songs. There's the Patio lounge, with dizzying views looking up to the ceiling 33 stories above.

On the 86th floor there's a sophisticated Shanghainese restaurant--Club Jin Mao--that has several elegant private dining rooms with large, Chinese-style round tables.
On the 56th floor there are Italian, Japanese and seafood restaurants, each with tables with a view as well as barstools placed around open kitchens--especially appealing spots for travelers dining alone.

On the 55th floor is Canton, an elegant restaurant serving Hong Kong specialties. And on the lobby level is the 24-hour Grand Café, with panoramic views of the Bund--Shanghai's graceful, 1930s-era business district across the river.

There's also the Club Oasis fitness center and spa, with its 57th-floor swimming pool--call it a sky pool. Italian marble lines the Jacuzzi and cold plunge pools, and there are saunas, steam rooms and relaxation lounges.
Because the building is located at a bend in the river that separates the two sides of Shanghai, three-quarters of the hotel's rooms have river views. The Jin Mao tower, designed by Chicago architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is the tallest skyscraper in China (see: "World's Tallest Towers"). The rest of the building, in the center of the city's financial district, houses offices of international banks.

The Jin Mao Tower cost $540 million to build and was completed in 1998. Elevators whisk hotel guests to the 54th floor lobby in 47 seconds. The hotel has the world's longest laundry chute, relying on built-in buffers to slow laundry rocketing down 88 stories. Its garage has parking places for 1,000 cars and--this being China--2,000 bicycles.
