美国驻华使馆11月9日表示，中国警方已经警告北京的高级酒店，伊斯兰极端份子可能计画在下周发动攻击。但美国使馆发出的警告中并未清楚指明极端份子是来自中国国内亦或国外。
路透社报导，美国使馆在电邮中表示，中国政府告知使馆，他们正在采取适当的安全措施、调查可能存在的安全威胁。美国总统布什将将于11月19日至21日访问北京。
「使馆得知，中国警方通知酒店称伊斯兰极端份子可能计画下周期间攻击中国的四星级和五星级酒店，」电邮内容称。「入住中国四星级和五星级酒店的美国公民应当三思而行，对个人安全保持警觉，行为应谨慎。」
BBC报导说，中国当局已经做出保证，将会采取适当的安全措施，并对恐怖威胁进行彻底调查。不过中国当局还没有对这项报道做出评论。中国经常受到指责夸大伊斯兰激进分子的威胁，为当局镇压维吾尔少数民族提供依据。
北京经常警告说，中国西部的新疆地区的穆斯林激进分子曾经发出过威胁。许多维吾尔族人在新疆从事争取独立的运动。他们把新疆称作东突厥斯坦。他们反对汉族人最近大规模涌入这一地区。中国经常把这些分离主义分子称为恐怖主义分子。
U.S. Embassy in Beijing Warns of Possible Attacks (Update6)
Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) －－ The U.S. Embassy in Beijing warned its citizens of possible attacks on hotels in China over the coming week. U.S. President George W. Bush is due in the Chinese capital next week for a meeting of global chief executives.
Chinese police told hotel operators that Islamic extremists may be planning to attack four- and five-star hotels, according to a message for U.S. citizens posted on the embassy's Web site today. Marriott International Inc. was among companies that said they are bolstering security at their hotels in China.
``American citizens visiting Chinese four- and five-star hotels should review their plans carefully, remain vigilant with regard to their personal security, and exercise caution,'' the embassy said.
The message didn't give specifics of any Islamic group that may be linked to a threat. New York-based Human Rights Watch this year accused China of persecuting the country's 8 million Muslim Uighurs, who live in the northwestern Xinjiang region, and characterizing their separatist campaign as terrorism.
Bush Visit
Bush, his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad are among government and business leaders who will be in Beijing for the Ninth Annual CEO Forum, sponsored by BusinessWeek magazine, Nov. 15 and 16 at the China World Hotel.
A spokeswoman for the Shangri-La Asia Ltd.-owned China World, about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) east of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, said the hotel hadn't received any warning from the U.S. Embassy. The so-called warden message was sent by e-mail to U.S. citizens living in Beijing.
``I've only heard about this from friends forwarding me the e-mail,'' hotel spokeswoman Diane Fermin said. ``Shangri-La management hasn't issued any warning, but having said that, guest safety is our highest priority.''
Marriott's five-star Portman Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai began submitting details of guests' passports to local authorities daily as ``an added security measure,'' following a Nov. 4 meeting in which the city's tourism bureau told hotel operators about a possible threat, Portman spokeswoman Michelle Wan said.
Wendy Hu, a spokeswoman for Hyatt Hotels Corp.'s Grand Hyatt in Shanghai's financial district, said she received a notice from local authorities about the threat. The hotel has increased the number of security guards and is heightening supervision of entrances and underground parking lots, she said.
Hilton Hotels Corp.'s Beijing Hilton didn't receive any warning, spokeswoman Cici Cheng said.
George W. Bush stayed at the Marriott's Ritz-Carlton the last time he was in Shanghai in 2001, attending an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit there.
