Salaried staffers will see cuts, too
Salaried workers at General Motors Corp. will also see their numbers fall next year, by about 7%, as the automaker continues to cut jobs through attrition, Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner said Monday.
Hourly workers will bear the brunt of GM's plans to stop production at 12 plants and facilities in North America by the end of 2008. Wagoner said GM wants to eliminate 30,000 hourly jobs in North America by that time.
But he said GM will continue to cut salaried, executive and contract workers at about the same rate as in years past.
Since 2000, GM has cut its white-collar workforce by about 32%. Factoring in next year's cuts, that will rise to about 40%, Wagoner said.
We've been able to achieve that, frankly, while we've grown the workload, he told reporters at GM's headquarters Monday.
For example, we do more engineering work than we did five years ago, so there's been a huge increase in efficiency, and we've taken a lot of waste out.
The efficiency of GM's white-collar workforce in North America is at or approaching benchmark levels, he added.
Since Wagoner took over as CEO in 2000, he has emphasized GM's need to run fast and lean and integrate GM's operations overseas with North America.
For example, Wagoner said GM has saved hundreds of millions of dollars on engineering costs by developing the next-generation Saturn Vue small SUV in South Korea rather than in the United States.
