The future market is expecting another 3-4% appreciation
of the RMB against the Yuan in 2006. should you exchange
all your money into the RMB?
Not so fast! Most RMB deposit pay an interest rate a little
over 2%. While in the US you can get over 4% for a
10-month CD； if you invest your money in an ETF such as
"TLT", which is tied to longer-dated US bonds, current
defacto yield is a little over 5%, and you can enhance
your yield to over 7% if you do a little option writing.
this is not an exact apple-to-apple comparison, and TLT has
interest rate risks, but you get the idea.
I am not aware of any reasonably safe financial instrument
to park short-term money in China and get a return higher
than 3%. If there is one, please let us know.
The yield difference between china and US more than
compensate for any RMB appreciation expectations. You
probably just need to keep one-year of living expenses
in RMB if you are planning to live in China, but otherwise
it's still prudent to keep everything else in US dollars.
