TNT NV, one of the world's leading express delivery companies, said yesterday it's in advanced talks to acquire HOAU Logistics Group, China's biggest private roadway logistics firm.
The Dutch company has signed a letter of intent with Heilongjiang Province-based HOAU but did not disclose details on the pending deal. An announcement is expected when arrangements are concluded sometime next year.
TNT broke with its decade-long partner Sinotrans two years ago and later began to seek new ventures with smaller Chinese firms.
The firm is expanding to catch up with rivals DHL, FedEx and United Parcel Service Inc — all of which have announced regional hubs or increased flights in the Chinese market.
"HOAU's strong transportation capability will help TNT build a nationwide network unrivaled in China and achieve leadership in the market," said Kenneth McCall, chief executive officer of TNT China.
Wang Zhenghua, president of HOAU, said China's logistics sector has just taken off and is in need of professionals, advanced expertise, technologies and equipment.
"HOAU will borrow expertise from TNT and benefit from its resources," he said.
Last month, TNT announced it will form a 50-50 joint venture with China Ocean Shipping Group Co, China's largest shipping company, to provide storage for home appliance makers.
The venture will be operational in 2006.
DHL recently announced it will upgrade its gateway at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and will later expand its hub in Guangzhou. UPS is investing US$500 million to build an international hub at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in 2007.
FedEx plans to construct a US$150 million hub at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, its largest center outside the United States.
