On April 18, 2006 Motorola announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Orthogon Systems, a privately held, leading provider of high-performance fixed wireless solutions to expand the MOTOwi4 portfolio of IP, wireless broadband solutions. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2006.
Orthogon brings expertise in wireless Ethernet connectivity, a pioneer in intelligent OFDM-based, wireless IP, point-to-point transmission solutions, and award winning software-defined Ethernet bridges.
Motorola expects to advance Orthogon core technology to build it into a series of future products.
Orthogon is known for delivering true non-line of sight and reliable connectivity in the most challenging environments.
Since July 2003, Orthogon has installed thousands of wireless links, successfully connecting disparate networks within corporate enterprises, service providers and municipalities in 53 countries worldwide.
Motorola claims Orthogon is at the forefront of innovation in wireless OFDM point-to-point solutions and is highly complementary to Motorola’s MOTOwi4 wireless broadband capabilities.
Motorola has an existing minority equity investment in Orthogon, and has been a distributor of Orthogon’s products through its Canopy business since 2004.
Motorola satisfies a short-term tactical need by bringing Orthogon in-house. It will likely gain better margins by taking an ownership position in existing and new products it previously only distributed for Orthogon.
Motorola could be taking a strategic, long-term view of 4G and attempting to build its in-house expertise in OFDM.
The next-generation of standards (4G), will be developed on OFDM-based technology, and so bringing this expertise into Motorola’s R&D community at an early stage may enable them to position themselves successfully for the future of Mobility.
Wireless backhaul is becoming increasingly important as access bandwidth grows from voice, data and video applications.
Going forward, transport solutions will gain much attention as operators continue to seek reduction opportunities in Operating Expenses.
