Former Kremlin spy Alexander Litvinenko was buried yesterday, amid grave news about Dmitry Kovtun, one of the Russian businessmen Mr. Litvinenko met in London on the day he may have been poisoned. The increasingly mysterious events surrounding Mr. Litvinenko's death now center on a Nov. 1 encounter at the Pine Bar in the Millennium Hotel, where Mr. Litvinenko met Mr. Kovtun, who may now be in a coma, and Andrei Lugovoy, a former KGB colonel. All seven bar staff have tested positive for polonium-210, the rare radioactive poison that killed Mr. Litvinenko, and an official at the U.K. Health Protection Agency said there was no short-term danger to the bar staff but acknowledged there was a "very small" long-term risk of cancer, the Times of London reports. Officials are now trying to contact 250 customers who visited the bar on the same day. Results by the HPA also suggest that the polonium-210 may have been smuggled into the U.K. as early as two weeks before the poisoning, and it could have been dissolved in liquid before being slipped to Mr. Litvinenko. "If it was some sort of liquid, it could have been -- as in James Bond -- a little magic capsule," Dr. Michael Clark of the HPA tells the Guardian. As technicians follow the radioactive trail left by the poison across London and Moscow, attention is focusing on Mr. Lugovoy. He was scheduled to speak with U.K. and Russian investigators yesterday, but the meeting was postponed for what Russian investigators tell state media were "technical reasons," the Washington Post says.
Mr. Litvinenko was a Kremlin critic investigating the death of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who herself was a fierce Putin critic. Ms. Politkovskaya, who was shot dead two months ago, was the third journalist at Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta to die mysteriously in the past six years. And The Wall Street Journal notes that if Russia is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist, Novaya -- one of the last outposts of free speech left in the country -- may be the most dangerous media outlet to work for.
